Sharleen Boaden:

BIOGRAPHY:
Sharleen Boaden creates paintings that reflect her observations and interpretation of people going about their everyday lives and also her passion for roses.

She has from a young age been strongly attracted to the arts and literature and her poems have been featured in three editions of poetry compilations by the Poetry Institute of Africa. Her paintings have been featured in many exhibitions and festivals, including the Hilton Arts Festival and KZN’s Art in the Park. She also exhibits her work in galleries, most notably the Johan Smith Gallery in Clarens and Crouse Gallery in Durban.

In addition, Sharleen’s paintings are in numerous private collections. In her work, Sharleen often uses contemporary ideas combined with traditional technique. Her material is sourced from digital images which she captures with her ever present camera during her travels and frequently from old and recent family photographs. She endeavours to find the poetry within each subject she paints, to cause an emotional connection between the painting and its viewer.

Sharleen continues to explore new ways of expression with different materials and media. She lives in Durban, South Africa with her family.

ARTIST"S STATEMENT:
In my paintings, I endeavour to capture the emotive quality in the subjects I portray. I achieve this by variation of brushstroke, which creates movement and life and by using contrasts of light and colour in each composition. I am an impressionist, rather than a realist, preferring the viewer to be drawn by the essence of the subject rather than by it being just a replica of real life. I love painting people in everyday scenes and also roses, which continue to inspire me.
